First Meeting of the Steering Committee of the “Regional Surveillance, Border Stabilization and Migration Management” Project

The first meeting of the Steering Committee of the Regional Surveillance, Border Area Stabilization and Migration Management Project (RBSMMP) began on Wednesday morning at the meeting room of the Ministry of Interior, Decentralization and Local Development in Nouakchott.
The meeting, organized in collaboration between the General Directorate of Territorial Administration of the Ministry of Interior, Decentralization and Local Development and the European Neighborhood, Development and International Cooperation Mechanism, aims to inform the participants about the program and the progress of the project.
The Secretary General of the Ministry of Interior, Decentralization and Local Development, Mr. Abderrahmane Ould Elhassan, said that given the many challenges facing the region, and in order to achieve the objectives of the National Strategy for Migration Management adopted last July, the Ministry of Interior, Decentralization and Local Development, through this steering committee, intends to provide strategic and operational guidance to this strategy, by ensuring the coordination and implementation of its objectives.
He added that this committee was established by Decision No. 010 dated January 09, 2025 issued by the Minister of Interior, Decentralization and Local Development, in accordance with the technical and administrative provisions of the financing agreement.
He noted that the meetings of this committee are scheduled to be held once every six months.
After the opening of the meeting, the participants followed a presentation by the Director General of the Directorate General of Territorial Administration, Mr. Zaid Ladhan Ould Faal Am, on the reasons why Mauritania has become a destination for refugees and illegal immigrants and the measures taken at the national level to deal with this phenomenon.
