The Mauritanian delegation to COP29, currently taking place in Baku (Azerbaijan), led by Ms. Messouda Mint Baham Ould Mohamed Laghdaf, the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, organized two conferences at the Mauritanian pavilion on ‘Strengthening the resilience of societies to cope with the negative effects of climate change’, the first of which was presented by Mr. Limam Ould Abdawa, the Deputy Commissioner for Food Security.
The speaker reviewed the results of the first term of His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, in the social sphere, results paralleled by cash transfers, food distributions, the financing of income-generating projects, the nutrition of children and pregnant women, and the provision of agricultural inputs, livestock feed, and flood interventions in disaster areas.
He recalled the Mauritanian government’s establishment of a national food crisis response mechanism to support vulnerable groups affected by climate change and the adoption of a national fund to support this mechanism and finance the annual national response plan.
Ms. Ould Abdawa pointed out that the budget for this fund amounted to five billion ouguiyas MRO, and it was financed by the Mauritanian government and its development partners, such as the French development agency, the IMF, and the World Bank.
The second conference focused on the Banc d’Arguin National Park and its role in enhancing biodiversity in Mauritania.
The conference dealt with the specific climate of the Dakhlet-Nouadhibou wilaya, which is experiencing phenomena disrupting the environment due to climate change, explaining that these phenomena are threatening some of Imraguen’s villages due to rising ocean levels.
