Mauritania participates in opening of 29th session of COP on climate in Azerbaijan

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties on Climate (COP29) kicked off on Monday in the Azerbaijani city of Baku, in the presence of a high-level delegation from our country headed by the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Ms. Messouda Mint Bahham Ould Mohamed Laghdhaf.

The opening ceremony was marked by an exchange of speeches between the outgoing President of the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties on Climate Change, Mr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology of the United Arab Emirates, and the President-elect of the current session, Mr. Mukhtar Babayev, Minister of Energy Transition of Azerbaijan and Executive Secretary of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The interventions stressed the need for urgent action in order to reduce the catastrophic effects of climate change, and called for the approval of a single climate finance target to ensure that countries are immunized, stressing the need to launch carbon markets and make progress in implementation to achieve the goals and recommendations of COP28.

The Executive Secretary of the Framework Convention on Climate Change explained that this year a climate plan and weeks for 2025 will be launched while continuing to work to respond to urgent requirements.
