Group of Arab Ambassadors in Rome discusses Major Development and Supply Challenges in Gaza and Sudan

Nouakchott

On 9 September 2024, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania to Italy, accredited to the United Nations Organisations based in Rome and Chairman of the Group of Arab Ambassadors, H.E. Mohamed Mahmoud Ould Dahi, chaired the meeting of the Group of Arab Ambassadors with Mr QU Dongyu, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

This meeting focused on the major challenges linked to development and supply in Gaza and Sudan.

After expressing his gratitude to the Director-General for this opportunity and for his commitment to supporting these crucial issues, our ambassador introduced the meeting by stressing the urgent need for a ceasefire in Palestine and Sudan. He stressed that these protracted conflicts pose a serious threat to food security and the well-being of local populations, making the restoration of peace essential to enable the implementation of emergency measures for the supply of food products and the reconstruction of basic infrastructures.

These crises are no longer simply issues for the Arab-Muslim world, but now concern humanity as a whole and international law.

The Director-General of the FAO then took the floor to reiterate his unwavering support for these causes.

He informed the Arab ambassadors in Rome that, despite considerable obstacles, the organisation had managed to supply these areas and that it was continuing to make every effort to maintain humanitarian aid.

The discussions, in which a number of Arab ambassadors took an active part, including the Ambassador of the Arab League, Palestine, Yemen, Egypt and Sudan, then focused on ways in which the Arab countries and the FAO can work together to deal more effectively with specific crises, to strengthen current cooperation on food and to meet the challenges of agricultural development.

Finally, our ambassador reiterated his thanks to the Director General for his warm welcome and enlightening presentation. He also suggested institutionalising this type of meeting on a regular basis to ensure regular and coordinated monitoring of these vital issues.
