Foreign Minister: “It Is Time for the International Community To Take Urgent Measures To End the Israeli Aggression”

Mr. Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad, stressed that it is time for the international community to listen to the voice of truth and justice and take urgent measures to pressure Israel to end its barbaric aggression and force it to comply with international law and implement the orders of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Speaking at a ceremony to hand over the presidency of the 162nd session of the Arab League Council at the level of foreign ministers to his Yemeni counterpart, Shua’a Mohsen Al-Zindani, the minister added that Israel must ensure humanitarian aid to the displaced, the return of the displaced to their homes, and the start of reconstruction.

He stressed that the international community must be well aware that there is no alternative to a lasting political solution that guarantees the Palestinian people all their legitimate rights, including the recognition of their independent state on the borders of 4 June 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, and the final acceptance of Palestine as a sovereign state and a full member of the United Nations and its various organs.

During the ceremony, Mr. Ould Merzoug stressed that the Mauritanian presidency of the 161st session of the Arab League had witnessed some serious challenges, including the genocidal war waged by the Israeli occupation army against our people in Gaza and the rest of occupied Palestine for almost a year.

He pointed out that there is no longer any sanctity for the right to life, no limit to oppression and violation of human dignity, and we no longer wake up or sleep without the horrors of massacres and their tragedies.

In light of this crisis, we value unity above all, and we have worked in solidarity to strengthen and intensify consultation and coordination between our countries, in close cooperation with the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, on the issues raised during the last session, he said.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs added that within the framework of strengthening Arab partnerships with international and regional parties, the third session of the Arab Economic and Cooperation Forum with the countries of Central Asia and Azerbaijan was held in Doha in April 2024, and the tenth session of the Arab-China Cooperation Forum in Beijing in May 2024.

Recognizing the central role played by multilateral cooperation in addressing regional and international challenges, he spared no effort in all forums to call for the reform of the United Nations system and the global financial system, ensuring fair representation that reflects the interests of our countries and strengthens their contribution to the formulation of global decisions.
