Mauritanian Embassy in Addis -Abeba holds Ceremony on the Occasion of “Africa Day”

The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania in Ethiopia and the Permanent Delegation to the African Union, as Mauritania holds the rotating presidency of the African Union, held on Thursday a ceremony on the occasion of Africa Day, which falls on May 25 of each year, in cooperation with the African Union Commission.
The ceremony, which took place at the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Abeba, was attended by a large number of African and foreign ambassadors and heads of international and regional bodies residing in Addis- Abeba.
The ceremony, which began with the playing of the African Union anthem, was marked by the delivery by His Excellency the President of the Republic, the rotating President of the African Union, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, a speech via videoconference, wishing the continent lasting peace, common prosperity and impressive achievements on the road to progress.
His Excellency considered this anniversary an opportunity to honor the Founding Fathers, whose vision continues to fuel our ambitions and advance our joint action to achieve the Africa we want.
His Excellency enumerated the major achievements made by Africans in their unity, foremost of which was liberation from colonialism, the overthrow of the apartheid regime, and the peaceful resolution of many border disputes.
He pointed to the global challenges facing the African continent, which can only be overcome through solidarity and unity, and on top of these challenges is security and safety, the achievement of which is a prerequisite for ensuring development and prosperity in the continent.
His Excellency also stressed that this year’s celebrations mainly focus on youth and education, which is an important topic because youth is the greatest wealth of the continent and its future, and investment in education is the guarantor of the continent’s future.
He also noted the importance of initiatives launched under the African Union’s Agenda 2063 such as the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AUDA NEPAD) and the African Free Economic Zone (AFCFTA) to stimulate economic growth, attract investments and create sustainable jobs for Africans.
In her speech on the occasion, HE Ambassador Khadijettou Mint Mbarek Fall, Chairperson of the Committee of Permanent Representatives, welcomed the attendees, praising the importance of this anniversary and the role of the founding fathers and their contributions for the freedom, independence, union and development of the African continent.
She said that the commemoration of Africa Day comes this year under the slogan of education, stressing the priority of education and youth in the Mauritanian presidency of the Union, highlighting some of the challenges facing the continent and must be overcome to achieve the goals of Agenda 2063.
Ms. Monique Nsanazabakan, Vice-Chairperson of the African Union Commission, then took the floor and thanked Mauritania for holding this ceremony and called for this anniversary, which always reminds Africans of the importance and necessity of unity.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, HE. Mr. Moussa Faki Mahamat, spoke via videoconference where he stressed the need for African unity and Africa’s ability to achieve its aspirations.
