The Commissioner for Human Rights, Humanitarian Action and Relations with Civil Society, Mr. Cheikh Ahmedou Ould Ahmed Salem Ould Sidi, explained that civil society is a strong lever, a fundamental pillar and an active contributor to the various efforts for the development of the country.
Speaking at a ceremony organized by the Forum of Non-State Actors in Mauritania in cooperation with OHCHR, on Monday evening in Nouakchott, on the occasion of the success of Mauritania’s candidate for membership of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child, he added that the government relies a lot on the roles that civil society must play as an active and indispensable partner in various development fields.
He said that the President of the Republic, HE. Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh EL Ghazouani, aware of the importance of civil society and the contributions it must make to the country’s development and prosperity efforts, opened wide scope for him and provided His Excellency with the conditions that enable him to perform the roles entrusted to him, recalling in this context the adoption of a new law that facilitated access to associative work through the adoption of the permit system instead of the licensing system that had existed since 1964.
He stressed that the resounding success of Mauritania’s candidate for membership of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child did not come from a vacuum, but rather came from the great achievements made by Mauritania during the past five years in various fields of human rights, recalling in this context the adoption of two strategies approved by the Government that will enable the advancement of civil society on the one hand, and the promotion of human rights on the other.
He pointed out that Mrs. Zainabou Mint Taleb Moussa, who was chosen to be Mauritania’s candidate for this position due to her experience and effective field work in the field, will acquire during the exercise of her duties in this committee skills and field expertise that will be a support, help and motivation for civil society in our country to improve its performance by benefiting from the fight against others.
For his part, the President of the Forum of Non-Governmental Actors in Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Sidi, congratulated the Mauritanian government on the election of its candidate for membership in the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child, thanking the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Humanitarian Action and Relations with Civil Society, and all the bodies that contributed to achieving this resounding success, which is considered a success for Mauritanian civil society.
The member of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child, Ms. Zainebou Taleb Moussa, explained that this success and the previous ones are an embodiment of the place attached by the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, to the promotion and protection of human rights and to activate the performance of civil society organizations.
She said that this is the first time that a Mauritanian woman from civil society has run for a UN position of this magnitude, praising the effective role played by the Commissioner for Human Rights, Humanitarian Action and Relations with Civil Society in this context, and the efforts made by the Office to demonstrate the competencies of civil society and provide it with the opportunity to play its role in various development fields.
