The President of the Republic of Senegal, His Excellency Mr. Bassirouo Diomaye Faye, paid a one-day friendship and working visit to Mauritania on Thursday (April 18, 2024), during which he met with His Excellency the President of the Republic, Chairman of the African Union, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh EL Ghazouani.
This visit is particularly symbolic, as it is the first visit abroad by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye since his election as President of Senegal on March 24, which reflects the depth and strength of the close brotherly and historical relations between the two brotherly countries in various fields.
The leaders of the two countries will meet for the second time after their meeting less than a month ago in Dakar, where the President of the Republic was the first to congratulate his Senegalese counterpart at his inauguration ceremony.
Mauritania and Senegal have distinguished relations rooted in history, religion, geography, culture and common destiny, as well as various economic and investment relations, embodied in the signing of numerous agreements, memorandums of understanding and protocols.
Both countries are members of the Senegal River Investment Organization, often cited as an example of successful South-South cooperation, founded more than half a century ago on March 11, 1972 in Nouakchott by Mauritania, Mali and Senegal, and since then these three countries have been responsible for the joint management of the river’s water and what can be extracted from it (irrigation, energy, navigation), and Guinea later joined them.
The highly promising Ahmeim turtle gas project is a successful model of economic cooperation between Mauritania and Senegal.
With regard to South-South cooperation, Mauritania and Senegal are a good example of South-South cooperation, despite the economic climate that is not always favourable due to unforeseen events (COVID-19).
