Ministry of Interior Confirms: “Mauritania will not be an Alternative Homeland for Illegal Immigrants.”

The Ministry of the Interior and Decentralization affirmed the government’s complete and permanent concern for the sovereignty and vital interests of the nation, completely denying what is being circulated and rumored about the tendency to make Mauritania an alternative homeland for settling, receiving, or sheltering illegal foreign immigrants.
This came in a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior and Decentralization on Tuesday, a copy of which was received by the Mauritanian News Agency.
This is the text of the statement:
“On Monday, February 19, 2024, the Ministry of Interior and Decentralization hosted the initial negotiations between Mauritania and the European Union, on a draft of a joint declaration related to migration in accordance with the road map that was discussed between the two sides in Abrussels, December 11, 2023.
The draft document was discussed at the Ministry’s headquarters, between a delegation from our country headed by the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Interior and Decentralization and membership of representatives from the relevant government sectors, and a delegation from the European Union headed by Ms. Corinna Ulrich and membership of His Excellency Mr. William Jones, Ambassador and European Union Delegate in our country, and other officials from the European Union.
The in-depth discussion on the document aims to bring views closer together regarding what establishes a balanced and fair agreement that guarantees respect for the sovereignty and common interests of both parties and is consistent with the charters, systems and laws in force within the framework of international treaties and agreements in the field of migration.
The meetings will continue to study and scrutinize the provisions of the document, one by one, in the coming days, including what will be reviewed during the upcoming ministerial meeting between our country and the European Union, which will be hosted by the capital, Nouakchott, on the 7th of next March, during which the agreement is expected to be signed. In this regard, the door to negotiation was kept open, as part of an effort to reach a common understanding that serves the interests of both parties with regard to legal immigration and combating illegal immigration, and takes into account the challenges our country faces in this field, far from what some are promoting regarding the hypothesis of settling immigrants.
