President of the Republic Chairs Round Table on Prospects for Exploiting Green Hydrogen in Mauritania
Nouakchott

Thursday at the Presidential Palace in Nouakchott, a round table on the prospects for exploiting “green hydrogen” in Mauritania, in which His Excellency the President of the Spanish Government, Mr. Pedro Sánchez, and Ms. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and their accompanying delegation participated.
On this occasion, the President of the Republic delivered an introductory speech to this meeting, in which he stated:
“Your Excellency the President of the Government of Spain,
– Your Excellency the President of the Commission of the European Union,
– Mr. President of Hydrogen Europe,
– Ladies and gentlemen, CEOs and company representatives
First of all, I would like to renew to you, Mr. Head of Government, Madam President, and to your delegations, our welcome to Mauritania.
I also welcome the President of Hydrogen Europe as well as the CEOs and company representatives who are with us today, and thank them for their participation in this important meeting on green hydrogen.
This roundtable follows the meeting held in Brussels in October 2023 on the sidelines of the Global Gateway Forum where President von der Leyen and I launched the Team Europe initiative.
It is well established that our country has abundant renewable energy resources, wind and solar, which are almost unique in their quality and integration, as well as large reserves of iron and magnetite that are easy to enrich and specially approved for the production of green steel.
This enormous potential must serve as the basis for strong, dynamic and mutually beneficial energy cooperation between Mauritania and the EU.
Today, the main focus will be on the European outlook for green hydrogen and on the status, potential and prospects of Mauritania’s green hydrogen sector.
This round table will also be an opportunity to present the needs of the various parties in order to strengthen the presence of European actors and accelerate the development of this key sector.
I wish you a rich and fruitful discussion.
Thank you”
