Minister of Economy: “Mauritania Is Eager To Forge a Solid Partnership With the BRICS”

On 24 August, in Johannesburg (South Africa), Mr. Abdessalam Ould Mohamed Saleh, the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, who represents His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould El Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, at the work of the 15th BRICS Summit, delivered a speech in which he declared that a pre-established schedule forced the President of the Republic not to participate in this meeting which is taking place on a land dear to Mauritanians.

He indicated that the holding of the Summit at a time when the world is experiencing serious security, economic, and environmental crises is proof of a common will of these countries to work together, particularly the leaders of the African continent, to

consolidate peace and further advance development.

He added, in this context, that Mauritania is convinced that the action taken to ensure the effectiveness of efforts and means to resolve conflicts depends on the ability to build global development that takes into account the challenges of unemployment,

climate change, inequality, and marginalization, especially of rural women.

Mr. Ould Mohamed Saleh said that currently security is everyone’s responsibility before adding that we cannot ensure permanent security on the account of the security of others.

This is why, he said, in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, we call in all conflicts for a peaceful solution, based on international law, taking into account the concerns and interests of all parties, and establishing a lasting stability and security that build sustainable development.

The Minister pointed out that the BRICS group, which represents 25% of the world’s national product and with its extensive and different experience, financial capacity, and advanced technological expertise, can play the role of locomotive for inclusive growth on the African continent.

He assured that our country, which will soon join the club of gas and oil exporting countries, is eager to forge a solid partnership with the BRICS to make it benefit from the promising investment opportunities of Mauritania, citing as an

example, but not limited to, renewable energy, mining, gas, and oil.

The Minister also noted that Mauritania, under the leadership of His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, is delighted to play a constructive and central role to establish peace and promote sustainable development in Africa and in the Sahel region, which are facing many challenges, particularly those related to climate change, poverty, social inequalities, and security.

Mr. Ould Mohamed Saleh said that at the national level, the government has adopted an integrated, inclusive, and participatory policy, aimed at ensuring political and security stability, fighting against poverty, and strengthening social cohesion, to

ensure sustainable development that establishes an environmental and energy transition taking into account the challenges of climate change.

These institutional reforms, he said, are accompanied by the creation of a framework conducive to investment, the promotion of the business climate, and the support of private initiatives.

“We are convinced that all these reforms will yield important results and have already begun to bear fruit, because we are counting a lot on cooperation with brotherly and friendly countries, particularly those of the BRICS”, as he put it.
