CNDH President Meets With EU MPs

During the third day of his visit to the European Parliament, Me Ahmed Salem Bouhoubeyni, the President of the National Commission for Human Rights (CNDH), met several Members of the European Parliament with whom he discussed the human rights situation in Mauritania.

In this framework, he held talks with MP Juan Fernando Lopez Aguilar, the President of the EU Committee on Freedoms and Justice, and Ms. Lina Dupont, the Coordinator of the Committee on Freedoms and Justice and leader of the group working group on the security of the European People’s Party.

The Committee on Liberties is considered one of the most important in the Union in terms of cooperation with foreign countries.

The president of this commission and its coordinator both expressed their satisfaction with the cooperation with Mauritania and the level of commitment, appreciating the partnership with the CNDH as an independent body concerned with the promotion of human rights and adviser to the government on the matter.

Mr.  Bouhoubeyni informed the representatives of the Union on the reality of human rights in Mauritania, far from the one-upmanship discourse, reaffirming the concern of the CNDH to give international partners a real image of the situation of human rights in Mauritania.

He assured them of the CNDH’s desire to establish an effective partnership to consolidate the significant progress made in the country in human rights and overcome the difficulties, particularly the economic challenges which remain the major obstacle on the road to promoting human rights.

These meetings are part of the dynamics adopted by the CNDH as an independent body, different from the government and non-governmental organizations, to intensify its fruitful relations with all its partners.

Previously, the CNDH President had, within the framework of a working visit to Brussels, met the special representative of the European Union for human rights as well as several MPs to inform them of the real situation of human rights in Mauritania and the considerable progress made in this area.
