On 3 July, in Brussels, Mr. Ahmed Salem Ould Bouhoubeyni, the President of the National Commission for Human Rights (CNDH), was received by Mr. Eamon Gilmore, the Special Representative of the European Union for Human Rights, with his advisers, with whom he discussed issues relating to human rights and the general situation in Mauritania.
The international community takes into account the opinion of the CNDH on the reality of human rights in the country, as a reliable source and independent body of “A” status with the International Coalition, in accordance with the Paris Principles of the United Nations and as a structure concerned with the protection and promotion of human rights, which is involved in the follow-up of the recommendations issued by the United Nations commission in charge of human rights.
Ould Bouhoubeyni informed the EU official of the human rights situation in Mauritania and the government’s efforts in recent years, at different levels, including legislative, institutional, and judicial as well as in terms of awareness-raising campaigns to promote human rights.
The talks also addressed the shortcomings observed and the challenges that require the support and assistance of the European Union to overcome them, particularly at the economic level.
