On 22 December, in Nouakchott, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, oversaw the inauguration of infrastructure for the storage and conservation of fish, including the extension of the fish storage platform of the National Society for Distribution of Fish and a processing plant for fishery products.
The expansion of the storage platform capacity, which will help strengthen the company’s reserves of this basic product, is 1,000 tons.
This platform, which is considered to be the first storage platform to be built with funding from the public treasury, will enable the company to dispense with the services of private individuals to whom it annually sold quantities of fish amounting to 500 tonnes in exchange for storing its reserves.
The increase in the company’s storage capacity will enable it to improve the supply of all the distribution points it has opened in all the capitals of the wilayas, since these points reach approximately 404 points through which 47 tons of fish are distributed daily for the benefit of more than 141,000 citizens from vulnerable social classes, the equivalent of approximately 23,000 families.
The fish products promotion plant, which was planned and implemented by Mauritanian hands, with financing from the Abbas Holding group, will supply canned fish (sardines) to national markets, starting next January, this that will create added value that enhances our fishing income. This factory, which will provide between 200 and 300 jobs, aims to produce and market canned sardines from high quality raw materials caught in Mauritanian waters, frozen surface fish, frozen octopus, and high seas when available.
