President of Republic: “We Have Succeeded, in a Highly Troubled Regional and International Environment, in Ensuring the Peace and Security of our Country To Establish Global Sustainable Development”
On 15 December, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, indicated that the holding of the US-Africa Leaders Summit sends clear messages on the community of destiny and of our responsibility toward each other, which reinforces our hope to see this meeting contribute to the strengthening of cooperation between the United States of America and Africa and the shared conviction that human rights, democracy, sustainable development, security, and peace must be our essential concerns.
The President of the Republic, who was the second speaker at the Summit devoted to the discussion of the partnership in Agenda 2063, in the presence of President Joe Biden, declared that Mauritania had succeeded, in a highly troubled regional and international environment, to ensure its peace and security to establish global sustainable development. Here is the translation of this important speech:
“In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Beneficent,
Excellency Mr. Joe Biden, the President of the United States of America;
Excellencies Heads of State;
Gentlemen, Ladies,
The impact of the multiple crises that have arisen in the world recently on all countries has reinforced the feeling, among all of us, of the evidence that humanity has a common destiny and that we cannot think of a lasting peace without security for all, just as there is no individual success on climate change, since it is a battle that we are doomed to win – or lose – together.
The holding of our US-Africa Leaders Summit contains, in this, so many symbols of our awareness of a shared destiny, and of our responsibility toward each other, which reinforces our hope in our contribution to the strengthening of cooperation between the United States of America and Africa, and the anchoring of our shared faith in the centrality of man and his rights as well as the values of democracy, sustainable development, security, and peace. I would like to extend my congratulations to President Joe Biden for taking the initiative to organize this summit, thanking him for his interest in our continent and his support for the fight to face to all the great challenges it faces.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Our continent, Africa, is the most affected by the current crises, particularly security threats and climate change, which are inherent to multiple factors that the context does not allow to list here.
Despite this, Africa is now experiencing a new dynamic in the establishment of collective security for the entire continent, the improvement of basic infrastructure strengthening development, the preparation of favorable conditions for the desired economic integration, and the fight against climate change. I would like to highlight the leading role played by my brother, President Macky Sall, in this new dynamic, thanks to his recognized qualities as a leader and his faith in common African action.
Notwithstanding all these efforts, our continent continues to need the support of all its partners, particularly the United States of America, to achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063. Ladies and gentlemen,
In the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, we are making considerable efforts, like our brothers, to face the multiple security, climatic, and economic challenges that have invaded the world.
In this context, we have succeeded, in a highly troubled regional and international environment, in ensuring the peace and security of our country to establish global sustainable development. Just as we work tirelessly for the preservation of human rights and the anchoring of individual and collective freedoms; efforts that we are relentlessly pursuing, to win our total war against the legacy of slavery, discrimination, exclusion, and all forms of corruption, to establish good governance.
We have thus benefited, in all our efforts, from the valuable support of the United States of America through fruitful and constructive bilateral cooperation. I take the opportunity offered by this summit to express our satisfaction with what His Excellency President Joe Biden announced yesterday regarding our country’s eligibility for the benefits of the “Millennium Challenge Corporation” initiative and to reaffirm our hope of taking advantage of other instruments, such as “Feed the future” for the promotion of food self-sufficiency.
While reiterating my thanks to the United States of America for the constant support to our country and to Africa, in general, I hope for the strengthening, diversification, and continuation of this cooperation, wishing our summit howling success.
Thank you.”
