President of Republic Receives EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, Migration

On 23 March in Nouakchott, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, received a high-level delegation from the European Union led by Mr. Magnus Brunner, EU Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration.

The meeting focused on the cooperative relations between Mauritania and the European Union, and on ways to strengthen and develop them, particularly in the areas of migration, security, trade, and the digital and green economies.

In a statement to the Mauritanian news agency following the meeting, the EU Commissioner affirmed that Mauritania is a highly reliable strategic partner for the European Union, emphasizing that this partnership is evident in several areas and is based on a network of strong relationships spanning various sectors, including the digital economy, the green economy, trade, as well as migration and security management.

He added that Mauritania represents a stabilizing factor in a region facing significant challenges, which highlights the importance of cooperation with the country, particularly given the convergence of strategic priorities and objectives, as well as shared challenges, foremost among which are migration and security issues.

The EU Commissioner also noted that cooperation between the two parties in these areas is described as excellent, based on mutual trust and encompassing joint efforts in the fight against organized crime, migrant smuggling, and drug trafficking, given the harmful effects of these phenomena on societies, particularly on young people.

He noted that the discussions also focused on the next steps aimed at deepening and further strengthening this cooperation, reaffirming the EU’s commitment to supporting Mauritania and investing in a deeper, mutually beneficial partnership that serves the common interests of both parties.
