The National Agency for Statistics and Demographic and Economic Analysis indicated in its monthly bulletin that the national consumer price index recorded an increase of 0.8% in December 2025, while the inflation rate reached 1.6% according to the change over the past twelve months and 4.1% according to the year-over-year sliding measure.
The agency attributed in its bulletin, a copy of which was received by the Mauritanian News Agency, this increase to the rise in prices at the level of consumer functions; “food products and non-alcoholic beverages by 1.2%, “housing, water, gas, electricity, and other fuels” by 0.2%, and “communications” by 0.4%.
The agency explained in its bulletin that the prices of ‘food products and non-alcoholic beverages’ rose by 1.2% compared to last month. This increase is mainly due to the rise recorded in the subgroups: ‘coffee, tea, and cocoa’ by 8.8%, ‘fish and seafood’ by 4.1%, ‘milk, cheese, and eggs’ by 2.5%, ‘fruits’ by 1.8%, ‘vegetables’ by 1.0%, and ‘meat’ by 0.9%.
According to the bulletin’s data, prices for ‘housing, water, gas, electricity, and other fuels’ witnessed an increase of 0.2%, noting that this is due to the rise recorded in the subgroups: ‘maintenance and home renovation supplies’ by 0.7% and ‘fuels (firewood)’ by 0.7%.
Regarding the rise in telecommunications prices, the National Agency for Statistics and Demographic and Economic Analysis indicated that the prices of these services increased by 0.4%, attributing this mainly to the rise recorded in the sub-group: ‘telephone, fax, and internet’ by 0.5%.
The bulletin indicated that core inflation (excluding energy and fresh food) reached (+1.0%) according to the change over the last twelve months and (+4.0%) on a year-on-year basis.
Regarding inflation by product source, the bulletin indicated that prices of imported products increased by 0.8% compared to last month, with imported inflation reaching 0.6% based on the change over the past twelve months and 4.4% based on the annual rolling basis.
While the prices of local products increased by 0.8% compared to last month, bringing domestic inflation to 2.2% according to the change over the past twelve months and to 3.8% according to the annual moving average.
As for the upward trend in prices at the national level, an analysis of consumer price indicators by geographic regions revealed upward trends in prices nationwide, with the index recording an increase of 0.5% in both Nouakchott and Nouadhibou, while in other urban centers Aioun, Rosso, and Atar) prices rose by 1.0%.
