Mauritania participates in the African victims of terrorism conference

Rabat

Yesterday, Tuesday, Mauritania participated in the African Victims of Terrorism Conference held in Rabat, Morocco, under the slogan: ‘Working with Victims of Terrorism in Africa Towards Justice, Recovery, and Resilience.’

Our country was represented at this conference by a distinguished delegation headed by His Excellency the Ambassador, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad, Mr. Daman Hammer, who emphasized in his speech on the pivotal role Mauritania plays in confronting terrorism and its aftermath, and on its ongoing readiness to cooperate with all regional and international partners in order to achieve the aspirations of the peoples of the African continent for security and stability.

He explained that Mauritania has adopted in recent years a comprehensive approach to combating terrorism, based on development, dialogue, the consolidation of religious moderation, and the enhancement of state presence in various regions, noting that this experience has proven effective on the ground where it has become an internationally recognized model for combating terrorism, rebuilding trust between the state and society, and preventing extremist groups from exploiting social vulnerability.

He pointed out that, in this context, Mauritania has worked on developing programs to reintegrate those who were misled, enhancing the capabilities of the armed forces and security forces, launching extensive development projects, and supporting scholars and thinkers in promoting a moderate religious discourse.

The Secretary-General affirmed that Mauritania considers that confronting terrorism, as a cross-border phenomenon, requires collective action and wide international and regional cooperation, whether through the G5 Sahel or through partnerships with the United Nations, the African Union, and relevant international institutions.

He reviewed Mauritania’s efforts in supporting victims of terrorism in the Sahel region, noting that in recent years the country has hosted hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing violence and extremism, providing them with protection, care, and social and educational programs that have enabled many to rebuild their lives in conditions that preserve their human dignity. He also confirmed our country’s support for all initiatives aimed at protecting the rights of terrorism victims, empowering them, and providing them with psychological, social, and economic support.

On behalf of the Mauritanian government, the Secretary-General expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation to the brotherly Kingdom of Morocco for the generous invitation and excellent preparation and organization of this important forum, valuing the joint initiative between the Kingdom of Morocco and the United Nations Office in organizing this qualitative meeting, which serves as a platform to enhance coordination and intensify efforts in addressing the scourge of terrorism and its humanitarian consequences on the continent.
