Minister of Culture presides over the launch ceremony of Arabic Language Month

Nouakchott

The Minister of Culture, Arts, Communication, and Relations with Parliament, Mr. Hussein Medu, chaired this morning, Monday, a ceremony to launch Arabic Language Month, organized by the Coordinating Committee of Arabic Language Custodians under the Chairmanship of the Arabic Language Council, under the theme “Innovative Paths for the Arabic Language.”

During the ceremony, a presentation was made about the journey of celebrating the Arabic language, which has evolved from being observed for a day to being celebrated for a month, and the digital access key to the Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language was distributed.

The committee, chaired by His Excellency Mr. Sy Adama Samba, also presented the November 28 petition for linguistic sovereignty, which included demands and proposals to His Excellency the Minister of Culture, Arts, Communication, and Relations with Parliament, the government spokesperson.

In his speech during the ceremony, His Excellency the Minister of Culture pointed out that this meeting carries deep significance regarding the value the Islamic Republic of Mauritania places on the Arabic language and its commitment to preserving and promoting it, as it is the language of the Quran, a vessel of values and knowledge, and a bridge of communication between generations and peoples. He emphasized that the Arabic language in Mauritania has been a glowing beacon and a mobile embassy carried by scholars and poets in every time and place, spreading its light and knowledge, stimulating creativity, and affirming its identity.

For his part, the President of the Arabic Language Council, Mr. Khalil Al-Nahwi, considered the presence of His Excellency the Minister as a symbol of the interest of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani, and the government in the Arabic language and in enhancing its status in the country.

Last year’s celebration of the Arabic language witnessed some important steps at both the governmental and associative levels in favor of the Arabic language, in the process of implementing Article 6 of the Mauritanian Constitution. These included enhancing its status in educational curricula, working on Arabizing administrative messages and documents, Arabizing vehicle license plates, in addition to signing a petition by more than sixty active bodies and organizations, which will be submitted to His Excellency the Minister this year.
