Mauritania promotes a strategic vision of investment and diplomacy

Ottawa, November 1, 2025 — The Islamic Republic of Mauritania received high honors on the second day of the International Business Forum held at the Parliament of Canada in Ottawa, where an award was presented to the country for its notable participation. The Mauritanian delegation was led by Mr. Niang Jibril Hamady, Ambassador to Canada, who represented President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani and presented Mauritania’s national vision at this high-level diplomatic and economic meeting.

Under the theme “Canada–Africa Diplomacy and Partnerships,” the meeting brought together senior officials, parliamentarians, diplomats, and business leaders from Africa and Canada. In this prestigious setting, Mr. Niang Jibril Hamady presented compelling arguments in favor of Mauritania as a stable and safe destination for foreign investment, highlighting the country’s strategic importance in a region often marked by volatility.Mauritania emphasizes the mining sector as a gateway to sustainable partnerships.

At the heart of his speech was Mauritania’s leading role in the mining sector, particularly in gold extraction. Mr. Niang Jibril cited the successful partnership with Kinross, a Canadian company that is the largest investor in Mauritania’s gold industry, as a model of bilateral success. He also highlighted the growing potential for investment in green energy and natural gas, sectors aligned with the country’s broader economic diversification agenda.The ambassador also recalled the historical, academic, and cultural ties between Mauritania and Canada, noting that the current context offers promising new opportunities to expand cooperation in trade, energy, and innovation.

In response to questions from moderators, panelists, and participants, Mr. Niang Jibril reaffirmed Mauritania’s position as a priority investment hub in West Africa, driven by political stability and a clear development roadmap, supported by both the government and civil society.A new diplomatic era: a dynamic engagement with CanadaRepresenting not only Mauritania but also the vision of President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, Mr. Niang Jibril embodied a new generation of Mauritanian diplomacy — forward-looking and open to the world. This stance emphasizes a dynamic approach to economic, commercial, and cultural diplomacy, aimed at strengthening partnerships and opening new avenues of cooperation with Canada and other international allies.

Mauritania’s participation was highlighted by dynamic exhibitions, including a dedicated space within the Parliament and a successful cultural presentation at Ottawa City Hall. The prestigious award was officially presented to engineer Mene Elemine El-Houssein, president of the Mauritanian-Canadian Economic and Cultural Alliance, who led the mobilization of civil society and the organization of the national exhibition.

The leading role played by Mauritania at the forum reflects the country’s rising influence on the international stage and its commitment to promoting sustainable partnerships based on innovation, diplomacy, and shared economic prosperity.
