President orders Strengthening of Traffic Safety Measures All Over the Country

Nouakchott, July 29, 2025 (WAM) – The Council of Ministers met today, Tuesday, July 29, 2025, under the chairmanship of His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, President of the Republic.

The Council reviewed and approved the following draft decrees:

– Draft decree revising the regulatory framework for special education at the primary and secondary levels.

The current draft decree aims to harmonize the texts governing the private education sector with the requirements of the guiding law, raise the quality of the sector’s performance, and improve school provision, in accordance with the high directives of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.

– Draft decree appointing the president and members of the board of directors of the University of Nouadhibou.

– Draft decree granting temporary use of a plot of land in the port district of Nouakchott South to AFRIPLAST.

This grant will enable Afriplast to set up a factory for the production of pipes and plastic products, as part of its drive to expand its industrial activities. The project is central to the national policy of promoting industrial sectors that can replace imports and will enable:

  • Creation of 250 direct jobs and 300 indirect jobs;
  • Reduction in imports of plastic products;
  • Promotion of local manufacturing.

– Draft decree amending and supplementing certain provisions of Decree No. 2017-044 of April 20, 2017, supplementing the regulation of certain traffic offenses.

The draft decree aims to amend and supplement certain provisions of Decree No. 2017-044 in order to include new offenses relating to the illegal use of lanes reserved for BHNS express buses. It also aims to set appropriate fines to deter offenders, as well as to enhance the effectiveness of the traffic system and encourage respect for public transport facilities.

In the area of road safety, with the autumn holiday season approaching, a period traditionally known for heavy traffic on our roads, this period is often accompanied by a large number of accidents, as has been the case in recent days. These tragedies are not just numbers and statistics, but accidents that affect lives.

These human losses remind us of the importance of vigilance, responsibility, and determination in our work. In this context, the President of the Republic has instructed the relevant authorities to immediately strengthen traffic safety measures throughout the country so that the holiday remains a moment of joy rather than an occasion for mourning. His Excellency emphasized:

– Redouble efforts to make the awareness campaign clear and accessible in all regions so that every driver and road user is aware of the risks and the behaviors to adopt.

 

– Fully mobilize road surveillance devices to prevent speeding, failure to maintain a safe distance, and cell phone use while driving.

 

– Ensuring strict enforcement of applicable laws and regulations,eploy additional human and technical resources.

On the other hand, in light of the results of the working visit made by His Excellency the President of the Republic to the state of Nouadhibou on July 28, the Council of Ministers expressed its warm thanks and congratulations to the people of this province in general and the people of the Nouadhibou district in particular for their outstanding mobilization and warm welcome they extended to His Excellency the President of the Republic and his accompanying delegation during this important visit, during which His Excellency oversaw the launch and inauguration of several development projects for the benefit of the population.
