The following is the text of the President’s speech
“Mr. President and dear brother, Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
Mr. Murray O’Shaughnessy, Chief Executive Officer of British Petroleum
Ladies and gentlemen.
Allow me first to welcome you on this occasion, which marks a pivotal milestone in the partnership between our two countries on the one hand and our partners BP and Kosmos on the other.
Today, we celebrate with great satisfaction the completion of the first phase of the Greater Turtle Ahmeyim project, a project that has put our two countries, Mauritania and Senegal, on the map of LNG producers and exporters.
This success is more than a technical or economic achievement, it reflects the depth of the historical ties of brotherhood, friendship and good neighborliness between Senegal and Mauritania.
Senegal and Mauritania are two countries united by history, geography and a common future, and the Turtle Ahmeyim project, located deep in the water on our common border, clearly reflects what two African countries can achieve by combining their efforts and expertise and pursuing their common ambition.
It is also tangible evidence of the enormous potential that can result from honest, balanced and mutually trusting cooperation.
I would like to thank our partners BP and KOSMOS for their fruitfulul cooperation and leadership throughout this first phase, during which they have shown decisive commitment.
I highly appreciate the great work done by the teams of our two countries, whether at the level of ministries, national companies or mixed units, who have shown rigor, perseverance and a spirit of cooperation, thanks to which this vision has become a reality.
I am particularly pleased to recognize the young Mauritanian and Senegalese talent working on this project.
This shows the importance we place on local content and the development of our human resources.
This first phase of the project is the cornerstone of a profound energy transformation to which both Senegal and Mauritania aspire, a transformation that opens the way to accelerate the exploitation of our natural resources and the use of gas in our economies to meet the energy needs of our peoples and industries.
In conclusion, I hope that this exemplary partnership between Mauritania and Senegal will continue to shine and inspire other initiatives that serve our peoples and our continent.
Thank you.”
