President of the Republic Chairperson of AU participates in a High-level Meeting of the African Heads of State and Government Committee on Climate Change

His Excellency the President of the Republic, Chairperson of the African Union, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh ELGhazouani, participated on Wednesday morning, on the sidelines of the 79th ordinary session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, in a high-level meeting of the African Heads of State and Government Committee on Climate Change, chaired by His Excellency the President of Kenya, Mr. William Ruto, known as CAHOSCC.

In his speech on the occasion, His Excellency the President of the Republic expressed his appreciation for the efforts made by his brother, the President of Kenya, Chairman of the Committee, and his commitment to work to bring together the views of African countries on an important topic such as climate change, adding that this approach of coordination is very important and thanks to which Africa has been able to make its voice heard in the international arena, expressing a firm commitment to defending the interests of the continent and ensuring that it speaks with one voice in international negotiations on climate change.

The President stressed that teamwork is the real force, and that unity is needed now more than ever, especially in light of the preparation for the Conference of the Parties 29 in the Republic of Azerbaijan in a few months.

He added that the main challenge of these negotiations is to define the collective goal, which is critical to financing mitigation and adaptation measures and which requires close coordination among African countries, noting that it is essential that Africa – as the continent most vulnerable to the effects of climate change – play its full role in the discussions and obtain guarantees of sustainable financial support.

In his speech, the President of the Republic also stressed that Mauritania is firmly committed to playing a leading role on the world stage with regard to the green economy, especially in the field of hydrogen, and is committed to putting its enormous potential in the field of renewable energy at the service of the continent and the global economy.

He added that Mauritania’s coastline, which is more than 750 km long with almost continuous winds of more than 9 meters per second, offers a unique opportunity to establish large wind farms, and our lands benefit from exceptional sunlight, estimated between 2,000 and 2,300 kilowatts per square meter per year, considering that these resources will make Mauritania and Africa key players in the transition to a low-carbon economy and in the production of green hydrogen, stressing that he is fully convinced that joint efforts With the efforts of our brothers on the continent will allow to contribute decisively to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions on a global scale.

In addition to the President of the Republic, the meeting was attended by the Minister in charge of the Office of the President of the Republic, Mr. Nani Ould Shrougha,the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Mrs. Messouda Mint Baham, His Excellency the Designate of the Presidency of the Republic, Mr. Saleh Ould Dahmash, Her Excellency the Ambassador of our country to the African Union, Mrs. Khadija Mbarek Vall, and His Excellency the Ambassador of our country to the United Nations, Mr. Sidi Ould Mohamed Laghdaf.
