Adis Ababa

The President of the Nouakchott Region, Chairperson of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and member of the Sub-Saharan Regional Climate Forum, Fatimetou Mint Abdel Malick, participated on Wednesday in Addis Ababa in the first edition of the African Urban Forum, organized by the African Union and the Ethiopian government.

Speaking at the opening session of the forum, the Head of the Nouakchott Region reviewed the reality of the city of Nouakchott, which has witnessed rapid urban expansion and significant demographic growth due to the negative effects of climate change, which has negatively affected the provision of basic services in parallel with the rapid urbanization.

This forum is a great opportunity for Nouakchott and other African cities to discuss common challenges, exchange experiences and attract development partners to accompany local development plans.

The region president thanked the African Union and the Ethiopian government for this first initiative of its kind, and praised Nouakchott’s partners who are supporting its development projects to complement the government’s efforts to provide services to the people of Nouakchott.

She also participated in specialized discussions on several topics related to urban development, especially strengthening the powers and resources of local communities, as well as financing mechanisms and economic transformation.
