On 27 June, in Nouakchott, Mr. Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad, received an African Union (AU) observation mission that came to monitor the presidential election of 29 June 2024, led by HE Mr. Domitien Ndayizeye. During the meeting, which took place at the request of the mission, the minister thanked the AU for its initiative to observe the elections, explaining that the Mauritanian government took all the necessary institutional and logistical measures to ensure the smooth and transparent conduct of the electoral process.
Mr. Ould Merzoug stressed the government’s availability to receive all observations or recommendations made by the mission to help ensure the highest standards of transparency, integrity, and freedom of expression to serve the promotion of the State of law and strengthen efforts for comprehensive and sustainable national development in a context of harmony, security, and stability.
For its part, the AU mission welcomed the efforts made by Mauritania to prepare for the elections. It declared itself fully prepared to provide support to ensure the success of the electoral process.
