Government Spokesman: ‘Mauritania Will Not Be a Resettlement Country for Migrants’

On 28 February, in Nouakchott, Mr. Nani Ould Chrougha, the Minister of Oil, Mines, and Energy, Government Spokesman, reaffirmed that Mauritania will not be a country of resettlement for migrants. He considered that rumors circulating about the migration agreement between Mauritania and the European Union (EU) have no goal but to intimidate citizens.

In his response to a question on this subject, while commenting on the results of the Cabinet weekly meeting, he denied the existence of any agreement between Mauritania and the EU on migration so far.

He stressed that the issue is that Mauritania had demanded the establishment of a cooperative framework with the EU due to its geographical location and regional conditions, adding that the discussion is still ongoing.

He pointed out that Mauritania has had a bilateral agreement with the Kingdom of Spain regarding migration since 2003, and for objective reasons, it called for canceling or updating this agreement, which the two parties have begun working on.
