Mauritania, France Sign MoU To Improve Civil Society Performance

On 2 November, in Nouakchott, Mr. Cheikh Ahmedou Ould Ahmed Salem Ould Sidi, the Commissioner for Human Rights, Humanitarian Action, and Relations with Civil Society, signed with HE Mr. Alexandra Garcia, the French ambassador to Mauritania, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to support and structure civil society in Mauritania.

The MoU aims to ensure greater involvement of civil society organizations as part of a vision of monitoring and evaluating public policies for the country’s economic and social development.

In a speech on the occasion, The Commissioner said that the MoU constitutes further proof of the solidity of relations between the two friendly countries, noting that the French embassy in Nouakchott has always been a valuable partner of the Commissioner for Human Rights and actively participated in the development of a national strategy prepared by the Commission to improve the performance of civil society structures.

He added that the cooperative relations between the Commission and the French embassy concern broad interventions covering several projects, including the Al-Fajr program, considered one of the most significant support programs for civil society in Mauritania, and the multi-actor program financed by the French Development Agency in addition to capacity building of the regional civil society platform.

For his part, the French ambassador stressed that his country has committed itself for years to supporting and accompanying civil society, noting that the MoU will contribute to strengthening this movement and achieving the desired results.
