On 8 February, Mr. Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad, welcomed his Russian guest, praising the bilateral relations that have existed between the two countries for decades. During a press briefing he held at the Diplomatic Academy, accompanied by his Russian counterpart, HE Sergei Lavrov, Ould Merzoug said that he assured his Russian counterpart of our country’s adherence to the rules of international law and the United Nations Charter, respect for state sovereignty, and the peaceful settlement of disputes. He also stressed the importance of the G-5 Sahel in the areas of security and development in the region.
He said he reviewed with his Russian counterpart the dangerous repercussions of the Russian-Ukrainian war and our country’s fears about the extension of the war and its worsening repercussions, calling for an early solution to this conflict through negotiation.
At the level of bilateral cooperation, he pointed out that the two parties agreed to establish a consultation mechanism and expand the joint fisheries cooperation committee to other areas of cooperation to achieve their common interests and aspirations of their two friendly people.
For his part, Mr. Lavrov praised the warm welcome and hospitality he received during his visit to our country. He paid tribute to the level of friendship and fruitful cooperation between the two countries over six decades, stressing the determination of the two countries to develop them to serve common interests.
