Ms. Lalya Kamara, the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, took part in the high-level segment of the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP), whose work began on 15 December 2022 in Montreal, Canada. This conference, chaired by China, includes ministerial negotiations, which should lead to adopting a 2020-2030 global strategic framework for biodiversity.
After her address in plenary on behalf of Mauritania, the Minister took part in a ministerial dialogue organized by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) relating to the mobilization of financial resources and the ambition of the post-2020 global framework. Discussions focused on the financial mechanisms to ensure implementation in the current context.
Ms. Kamara also participated in the consultation between the donor countries and the African group. This meeting enabled African countries to clarify their common position concerning the scope and scale of the financial instruments that should benefit the implementation of the global biodiversity framework.
The Minister had working meetings with Mr. Ibrahim Thiaw, the Executive Secretary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), and Ms. Linxiu, the Director of the International Ecosystem Partnership Unit (IEMP) of the UN Environment Program (UNEP).
