Minister of Agriculture Signs Agreement With FAO Representative on Institutional Support

On 7 December, in Nouakchott, the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Yahya Ould Ahmed El Waghf, signed, with Mr. Alexander Hayen, the representative of the UN Food Organization (FAO) to Mauritania, a technical support agreement in the field of institutional and operational capacity building of the Directorate of Plant Protection in Mauritania.
The financial support, amounting to $200,000 (Two hundred thousand US dollars) over two years, aims to improve the health control procedures for plant products by updating texts relating to plant protection, modernizing technical analysis approaches, and strengthening phytosanitary inspection capacities.
In a speech delivered on this occasion, the Minister of Agriculture affirmed that this support comes at the right time since it coincides with the creation of a specialized service for the protection of plants, which will give new impetus to this department in the accomplishment of its missions under good conditions.
He reiterated the desire of the department officials to continue cooperation with the organization, which he thanked for the support it provides to our country, particularly in the field of agricultural development.
