The work of the 31st ordinary session of the Arab Summit began on 1 November at Abdelatif Rahal International Conference Center in Algiers.
A warm and fraternal welcome was given to the President of the Republic upon his arrival at the Abdelatif Rahal International Conference Center by his brother Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the President of the sisterly People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria.
The Algiers Summit, called the “Reunification Summit”, seeks to achieve consensus on many issues and challenges facing the region, particularly those related to the situation in several Arab countries, as well as the Palestinian cause, as a central issue and other files of economic and trade cooperation.
In a speech at the start of the opening session, His Excellency Mr. Kais Assaid, the President of the 30th Session of the Council of the League of Arab States, reviewed the challenges facing Arab States.
He then called for the rejection of disagreements and the strengthening of cooperation between the different countries of the Arab nation.
The Tunisian President also noted that the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russian-Ukrainian war, and climate change, among others, have significantly affected Arab countries already facing many problems.
President Tebboune took over the presidency of the 31st session of the Arab Summit from his Tunisian counterpart, Mr. Kaïs Saïed, during the opening session.
In a speech delivered on this occasion, President Tebboune indicated that the Algiers Arab summit took place in a complex and sensitive regional and international context, marked by an aggravation of crises and conflicts in the Arab region.
Mr. Tebboune added that the Arab States had financial, human, and economic potential enabling them to play a central role in the global economy. He stressed the need to build an Arab economic bloc that would promote Arab integration and benefit the Arab people.
He called for substantial reforms to the League system that would strengthen its role and make Arab states capable of meeting various challenges.
The Algerian President proposed the creation of an Arab liaison and coordination committee to support the Palestinian cause.
In turn, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary General of the League of Arab States, explained that the Algiers summit was an opportunity to discuss the various challenges faced by the Arab States. He added that it would enable to review ways to cope with the negative impacts of the multiple international crises, which have considerably affected energy and food.
He called on the Arab States to develop a strategy to deal with multiple crises and build their resilience to emergency shocks, which would impose collective participatory plans and programs based on a sound scientific approach.
