Mauritania Signs Landmark Agreement for “Aman” Green Hydrogen Project

The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum signed a comprehensive agreement in Nouakchott on Wednesday with renewable energy development company CWP Global to develop the “Aman” Green Hydrogen Project. The agreement was signed on behalf of Mauritania by the Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Mr. Mohamed Ould Khaled, and on behalf of CWP Global by its Chairman, Mr. Mark Crandall.

The agreement is the first of its kind in Mauritania in the field of green hydrogen projects. It establishes a long-term contractual framework for the subsequent phases of the project and sets out the financial, economic, and developmental aspects related to its implementation.

The “Aman” project aims to produce approximately 1.2 million tonnes of green hydrogen and 6.6 million tonnes of green ammonia annually. The project is expected to contribute to the development of the fertilizer industry, strengthen food security, provide clean fuel, and open new prospects for industries linked to renewable energy.

The project is also expected to support the development of new industries in Mauritania, notably green steel production and the further processing of locally produced iron ore. Furthermore, it is projected to play a significant role in supporting the national economy and reducing the unemployment rate by one-third by 2035.
