President of Republic Leads Ministerial Meeting on Phase II of Nouakchott Development Project

As part of the continuous monitoring of the implementation of the “Ambition for the Nation” program, His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, chaired a meeting this Thursday morning (May 7, 2026) of the Ministerial Committee responsible for preparing the second phase of the Nouakchott City Development Program.

The meeting was dedicated to reviewing the outcomes of the first phase and discussing the features of the second phase of this ambitious structural program.

The presentations highlighted significant progress and qualitative results achieved during the first phase, most notably:

Education: Construction and renovation of 1,500 classrooms.

Health: Construction, renovation, and equipping of 28 health centers.

Water and Sanitation: Increased water production, strengthened pumping capacity, and expanded the distribution network; in addition, marshlands were reclaimed and the most affected areas were connected to the rainwater drainage network.

Electricity: Expansion of the Northern Power Plant by 72 megawatts, renovation of power lines, installation of new public lighting, and strengthening of the distribution network.

Infrastructure: Construction of 138 km of asphalt roads, including 68 km dedicated to improving the urban road network.

Sports: Construction of an Olympic swimming pool—the first of its kind—with a capacity to host 1,000 competitors; construction of two stadiums in Sebkha and El Mina; and a multi-purpose sports hall in Arafat.

Environment: Reforestation of major avenues in the capital and development of several green spaces.

Work on the remaining components is expected to be completed during the current month, with the exception of the power plant expansion, which is scheduled for delivery next August.

The meeting also addressed the progress of preparations for the second phase of the program, which will serve as a new milestone in the ongoing effort to strengthen essential infrastructure in education, health, water, electricity, roads, and sports facilities.
