Organizing a Workshop to activate the National Framework for Airborne, Hydrological, and Climatic Services.

The National Meteorological Agency organized a national workshop this morning, Wednesday, in Nouakchott, focusing on activating the national framework for meteorological, hydrological, and climatic services, as part of efforts to enhance institutional coordination and develop mechanisms to respond to climate change.The aim of this workshop is to enhance the use of climatic and hydrological information in vital sectors, to serve sustainable development plans and contribute to improving preparedness for risks associated with climate change.
In a speech on the occasion, the technical advisor in charge of meteorological observations and the social and environmental impacts of infrastructure and transport projects, Mr. Mohamed Mokhtar Gowad Ahmed Benane, explained that these consultative days represent a fundamental step towards activating the national framework for climate services, by improving the use of climatic, meteorological, and agricultural data. He pointed out that Mauritania is among the countries most vulnerable to climate fluctuations, due to its geographical location and its economy’s reliance on sectors that are directly impacted by climate conditions, making the development of this framework an urgent necessity.
He emphasized that the workshop represents an important station in the effort to adapt to climate changes, stressing the importance of political support and institutional cooperation in improving the quality and efficiency of aerial and climatic services provided to users, especially in the sectors of agriculture, livestock, health, water, energy, and disaster risk reduction.He also called for the establishment of a permanent and effective platform for dialogue and information exchange between producers and users in climate-sensitive sectors.For his part, the Director General of the National Meteorological Authority, Mr. Mohamed Mahmoud Demb, clarified that the organization of this workshop comes within the framework of updating the institutional and technical framework for climatic services and expanding their scope of use in serving national development.
He added that the workshop represents a practical step towards adopting a national plan to activate the framework, based on a participatory approach that takes into account the national context and current climate challenges.A number of officials from the equipment and transport sector, as well as representatives from technical partners and concerned national institutions, attended the opening of the workshop.
