Mauritania has proven its worth during its presidency of the African Union (AU), where HE the President of the Republic Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazwani, has been keen to consolidate the foundations of constructive and joint cooperation between Africa and the world, said Mahfoudh Ould Brahim, Advisor to the Presidency of the Republic.
In an exclusive interview with the Mauritanian News Agency, he added that under the leadership of the President of the Republic, African issues have gained an increasing presence on international agendas.
The presidential advisor spoke about the difficult international and regional context in which Mauritania assumed the presidency of the African Union in February 2024, whether in terms of crises in Africa, climate change, clean energy or international governance, as well as issues related to socio-economic development on the continent.
He said that His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazwani, has made great efforts to solve the issues facing the continent, as the clean energy file was a priority in his vision for Africa’s future. Africa’s potential in the field of renewable energy could put the continent in a position of global leadership, pointing out in this regard that the African continent may feed the world with green hydrogen by 2035.
Mr. Mahfoudh Ould Brahim pointed out that Mauritania has made great strides in the transition to clean energy, and that the country’s energy mix currently stands at 50%, and Mauritania is among the leading countries in the field of green hydrogen, which is the future of renewable energy.
He pointed out that during its presidency of the African Union, our country was able to put the protection and support of Africa financially and technically to face climate change on the international agenda, considering that African countries are the most vulnerable to climate change despite their small contribution to global emissions, in addition to the issues related to international governance, in which Mauritania has made great efforts to convey the voice of the continent and its fairness according to its size represented in 55 countries, including 1.5 billion people, stressing that Mauritania has insisted on the need for adequate representation of the African continent in international decision-making circles, especially in the Security Council
Mauritania has also made great efforts in mobilizing the resources necessary for the development of the continent, whether it is related to raising funds from the International Development Association of the World Bank, or with other partners interested in the continent, including major countries, in addition to solving the issues facing the continent, based on the country’s success in the security approach and its management of internal and border stability and peace, and its excellent relations with neighboring countries, the region, the continent in general and even the world, the presidential advisor added.
He recalled the great efforts made by His Excellency the President of the Republic, President of the African Union, to alleviate tensions and deal with the humanitarian aspects, whether in Libya, Sudan or the Great Lakes, or through other files that were dealt with through the mechanisms of the Union and the African Peace and Security Council.
He reiterated that the country won the presidency of the African Union with the consensus of all African leaders, and that His Excellency the President of the Republic managed that presidency with wisdom and insight, noting that if Mauritania had not been ready for the presidency of the African Union, there would have been major imbalances.
He said that Mauritania strongly defended all African issues in international forums and achieved great gains for the continent and the country, noting that it was a great opportunity to radiate the country and its presence at major global summits, such as the G7 Summit and the G20 Summit, of which the African Union has become a member, as well as the presence with great countries with a partnership with Africa, which enabled the voice of the continent and its urgent issues to reach the world, and this presence had positive implications for the country, diplomatic, political, strategic and even media gains.
