National Authority to Combat Trafficking in Persons distributes Financial Grants to Victims of Trafficking in Persons

The National Authority to Combat Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants organized on Thursday in the capital Nouakchott a ceremony to hand over grants to victims of trafficking in persons to several organizations active in the field.

Ten victims of trafficking in persons and slavery from two organizations selected by the Fund for the Support of Victims of Trafficking in Persons benefited from these grants.

In a speech on this occasion, Mr. Sayed Ahmed Ali Bannan, Commissioner for Human Rights, Humanitarian Action and Relations with Civil Society, stressed that the keenness of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani, to promote human rights in general and to combat trafficking in persons in particular, enabled our country to achieve a qualitative leap in the field of combating trafficking in persons, which was the subject of national appreciation and international praise, and this was embodied through our country’s maintenance of its classification at the second level on the index of trafficking in persons. issued by the US State Department in its last annual report in 2024.

He praised the level of openness to society and the participatory approach enacted by His Excellency the President of the Republic since he assumed power, as he made civil society an active and present partner in addressing all issues related to human rights, which enabled the achievement of significant results.

The Commissioner pointed out that UNHCR seeks, through the activities carried out by the National Authority to Combat Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants, to support victims to obtain and enjoy their rights in full and enable them to engage in income-generating activities that guarantee them a life in dignity and independence.

Matt Ryan, Political Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Mauritania, said that the United States, as a friend and partner of Mauritania and its people, continues to support the National Authority to Combat Trafficking in Persons and Migrant Smuggling.
