Oil Minister Announces Completion of Ahmeyim Project

On 24 July, Mr. Nani Ould Chrougha, the Minister of Oil, Mines, and Energy, Government Spokesperson, announced the completion of the components of the Ahmeyim project. He declared that the completion rate of the project reached 95%, emphasizing that “We are gradually and steadily approaching the first gas shipment, and we are waiting more than ever for this event.”

This statement follows a joint visit made today with his counterpart, Mr. Birame Souleye Diop, the Senegalese Minister of Energy, Oil, and Mines, to the FPSO vessel of the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project, located in the Atlantic Ocean in 40 kilometers off the coast.

The minister added that Mauritania and Senegal are working together with all partners to achieve the project’s objective of producing 2.3 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year for more than 20 years.

This field visit is part of monitoring the development program of the GTA field, which is a joint gas field between Mauritania and the Republic of Senegal, developed in partnership with the British BP and American Cosmos Energy.

The main function of the FPSO is to purify the gas, remove water, oil, and impurities, and store it before it is transported by pipeline under the sea to the liquefaction platform FLNG located 10 kilometers offshore.

The FPSO’s arrival at its final location constitutes an important step in the development of the GTA gas project since it is the fourth and final element necessary to complete the production facilities of the first phase of the project. The FPSO will operate at its capacity of 8 units to process and produce 500 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.
