On 23 October, in Nouakchott, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, received General Michael E. Langley, the Commander of the U.S Africa Command (AFRICOM).
At the end of the meeting, the AFRICOM Commander made a statement to the Mauritanian news agency, in which he thanked to His Excellency, the President of the Republic for the warm welcome and generous hospitality that he and the delegation accompanying him received.
He indicated that the United States welcomes the role and continued efforts of Mauritania in the fight against terrorism and the prevention of violent extremism in the Sahel region, adding that his country also appreciates the leadership of Mauritania in the field of regional security, especially since it is the host country of the G-5 Sahel Executive Secretariat and the Defense College of this group.
Gen. Langley revealed that he had fruitful discussions with His Excellency the President of the Republic on the solid security cooperation between the two countries and the means to strengthen it, saying that his visit to Mauritania reinforces the commitment of Mr. Joe Biden, the President of the States -United of America, to strengthen relations with African partners. He stressed that American security programs have provided training for Mauritanian military units for decades and have contributed to the professional training of Mauritanian military officers through programs in American military schools.
These efforts will help the Mauritanians strengthen security and defense and improve their infrastructure, welcoming the strong friendship between the two countries, as he put it.
He thanked, once again, the President of the Republic for the precious time he gave to him and U.S Ambassador Cynthia Kirscht.
