EU Delegation Visits G5 Sahel Mauritanian-based Military Base

A delegation from the European Union had paid yesterday, Thursday, a visit to the G5 Sahel Mauritanian-based military base in Nbeikit Laouach.

During this visit, the delegation was accompanied by the assistant governor Mr. Mohamed Ould El Houssein Ould Ijih, acting governor of Hodh El Chargui, and the commander of the Mauritanian battalion in the G5 Sahel joint military force.

The delegation was briefed on progress of the construction works in this base and received detailed explanations on its capacity and circumstances under which its facilities were built despite the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The construction works include a command center, residential units for officers and soldiers, and a restaurant, as well as two water facilities.

The first phase of the project is funded by the European Union with a budget estimated at 4 billion old Ouguiyas.

In a statement to the Mauritanian News Agency, the ambassador, head of the European delegation in Mauritania, His Excellency Mr. Giacomo Durazzo, praised the role played by Mauritanian authorities in creating the expedient conditions for the success of the EU’s mission in the districts of Tichitt, Oualata, Nema, and Nbeikit Laouach.
