I will not go back over the exogenous and endogenous factors which are at the origin of this crisis or which are responsible for its longevity, nor on its impact on the whole of the sub-region and more generally on the continent in general: all this is known to all, widely analyzed and documented.

I would simply like to emphasize that no lasting solution to this crisis can be conceived and implemented effectively without the strong involvement of all Libyans and the African Union.

In this regard, I salute the remarkable work carried out with efficiency and foresight, in synergy with the United Nations, by my brother and friend, His Excellency Mr. Denis Sassou Nguesso, the President of the Republic of Congo, Chairman of the High Committee on Libya.

His leadership, his diplomatic tact, and the relevance of his vision were major assets in the effectiveness of the work carried out by the high committee on Libya, which contributed, for example, to launching with the Libyan brothers, mobilized under the auspices of the

Libyan Presidential Council, a reconciliation process which has already given its first results: the success of the preparatory meeting of the inter-Libyan conference.

We, in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, are convinced that this Libyan crisis has lasted too long, and that it is absolutely urgent and necessary to find a peaceful and definitive solution to it;

and that this solution must involve all Libyans, preserve the territorial integrity of the country, and allow it to enjoy peace and security so that Libya becomes again what it has always been, a country of peace, security, and of prosperity.

Consequently, we reiterate, here, our firm support for the actions carried out in this direction by his Excellency Mr. Denis Sassou Nguesso, the President of the High Committee on Libya.

We are sure that Libya is at the end of the tunnel and there is light on the horizon. There is no need to recall the age-old bonds of friendship and fraternity and the shared history and culture that unite the two Mauritanian and Libyan people.

I also call on my Libyan brothers to overcome their internal quarrels, put the general interest of the Libyan people before any other consideration,and count on our active solidarity and our unwavering support as well as that of the High Committee on Libya and the African Union as a whole.

Thank you.

”

On 17 February, in Addis Ababa, His Excellency Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, took part in the meeting of the high-level ad hoc committee on Libya.
