Dr. Pape Dombia, director of the veterinary services at the Ministry of Rural Development, affirmed, in statements to the Mauritanian news agency (AMI) that proactive measures were taken immediately after the emergence of the first cases of H5N1. Such measures included collecting bodies and disposing of them healthily, shutting down the reserve to visitors and traditional fishermen, in addition to conducting a comprehensive census of the local poultry, raising awareness among the breeders on the necessity of quarantining the poultry so they do not mix with wild birds, and monitoring the markets, particularly the most vulnerable areas, such as keur Macene.<\/p>\n
He added that a local committee, led by the district prefect, has been established to closely monitor the situation.<\/p>\n
He pointed out that Bird flu is a viral disease that affects wild birds and poultry and can be transmitted to humans; with factors that can help spread it such as: international trade exchanges, poultry breeding, and the presence of wild birds.<\/p>\n
He reassured the citizens that this disease has so far infected only wild birds, which have no contact with the local poultry that provide the national market with white meat, stressing that the consumption of poultry meat does not pose any danger to public health because national markets are subject to periodic inspection by the competent veterinary authorities.<\/p>\n
He noted that no cases of bird flu have so far been recorded in poultry and poultry markets in the country and that a joint mission comprising the sectors of rural development, health, environment, and sustainable development had been sent to follow up and evaluate the measures taken and to ensure their efficiency.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
