The work of the 35th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the member countries of the African Union (AU) started on 5 February at the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa, with the participation of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, and several other leaders of African countries or their representatives. <\/p>\n
The Summit began with an address by Mr. Moussa Faki Mahamat, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, during which he reviewed all the AU activities over the past year, the mechanisms followed by the member countries to deal with the COVID-19 repercussions, and their efforts to provide vaccines through self-interventions and global initiatives.<\/p>\n
For his part, Mr. Felix Tshisekedi, the President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the outgoing President of the African Union, focused on the COVID-19 pandemic and its significant impacts on the national economies of the African countries. He reviewed the plans adopted by the Union over the past year to help reduce these impacts and provide vaccines to countries on the African continent.<\/p>\n
After the speeches of the African leaders and some guests of honor, the office of the 2022 African Union Conference was announced, with the Senegalese President, Macky Sall, as President-in-Office of the African Union, replacing the RDC President, who held the presidency of the Union during the past year.<\/p>\n
During this summit organized under the theme: \u201cBuilding Resilience in Nutrition on The African Continent: Accelerate the Human Capital and Social and Economic Development\u201d, the African leaders will follow several reports related to the activities of the Peace and Security Council and the state of peace and security in Africa. They will also examine the report prepared by this Council on the implementation steps of the roadmap on practical measures to silence the guns in Africa.<\/p>\n
Similarly, The AU Heads of State and Government will follow a report on the Organization’s ability to respond to the demands imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic and measures to mobilize financial resources to accelerate economic recovery, development, and African integration. <\/p>\n
The AU 35th Conference will also witness the presentation of reports on governance in Africa in 2021, the 30th and 31st Forums of Heads of State and Government participating in the African Review Mechanism, and the AU annual reports and those of its organs. <\/p>\n
During this session, the AU will appoint 15 members of the Peace and Security Council, the members of the Panel of the Wise, and the Executive Director of the African Union Development Agency. The results of the third biannual coordination meeting, the decisions, and declarations of the 35th ordinary session of the African Union conference will be adopted. The Conference will also decide on the date and place of the future sessions. <\/p>\n
