{"id":33860,"date":"2026-10-08T22:10:06","date_gmt":"2026-10-08T22:10:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ami.mr\/en\/?p=33860"},"modified":"2026-10-08T22:10:06","modified_gmt":"2026-10-08T22:10:06","slug":"prime-minister-president-of-republic-directs-government-to-fully-implement-inquiry-commission-recommendations-on-nouakchott-electrical-fires","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ami.mr\/en\/archives\/33860","title":{"rendered":"Prime Minister: President of Republic Directs Government to Fully Implement Inquiry Commission Recommendations on Nouakchott Electrical Fires"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Prime Minister, Mr. El Moctar Ould Djay, chaired on Thursday at the Prime Minister\u2019s Office a meeting of the interministerial committee responsible for monitoring and managing the crisis resulting from the two fires that broke out on August 18 and 21, 2026, at the Nouakchott-North and Nouakchott-West electrical transformer substations.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of the meeting, the Prime Minister commended the various ministerial departments for the efforts made to mitigate the consequences of the incident, particularly their success in restoring service within a record time despite the scale of the fire and the damage it caused.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the meeting followed the audience granted earlier that Thursday by His Excellency the President of the Republic to the Chairman of the Independent Commission of Inquiry, in his presence. During the meeting, the President received the commission\u2019s report and was briefed on its main findings and recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>During the meeting, the Prime Minister commended the measures taken to restore service at the Nouakchott-North and Nouakchott-West electrical transformer substations within a record time, despite the complexity of the incident and the resulting damage.<\/p>\n<p>The Prime Minister also outlined the process through which the Independent Commission of Inquiry was established. The commission, chaired by former Minister Mr. Ousmane Mamoudou Kane, was composed of several experts and specialists. He indicated that the commission had submitted its final report on the evening of Tuesday, October 6, after being granted, at its request, an additional one-week extension.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, had received the Chairman and members of the commission on Thursday, in the presence of the Prime Minister, and had instructed the government to fully and rigorously implement the commission\u2019s recommendations in all their aspects.<\/p>\n<p>The Prime Minister explained that the recommendations call for strict administrative measures against those who failed to fulfill their obligations, in accordance with the allocation of responsibility arising from administrative errors and negligence. They also call for the initiation of the necessary legal proceedings to safeguard the public interest and sanction those who have violated applicable regulations and laws.<\/p>\n<p>He stressed the need to immediately begin rehabilitating the two damaged substations and to take all necessary preventive measures to ensure that similar incidents do not occur in the future.<\/p>\n<p>He ordered the development of an organizational and development plan for the Mauritanian Electricity Company (SOMELEC), with the aim of equipping it with the necessary capacities to provide quality service and ensure the effective management of the investment projects required to achieve this objective.<\/p>\n<p>He added that His Excellency the President of the Republic had instructed the government to make the report available to the national public, in the interest of transparency, and thanked the commission for the professional work it had carried out.<\/p>\n<p>On behalf of His Excellency the President of the Republic and the interministerial committee, the Prime Minister expressed his sincere thanks to the Chairman and members of the Independent Commission of Inquiry, while congratulating them on the work accomplished.<\/p>\n<p>During the meeting, the interministerial committee heard a presentation by the Chairman of the Commission of Inquiry, Mr. Ousmane Mamoudou Kane, on the conduct of the investigation and its findings.
