The Minister of Interior and Decentralization, Mr. Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug participated, on Tuesday via videoconference, in the work of the G-5 Sahel meeting on the implementation of the Bamako process. <\/p>\n
In his speech, the Minister said that since 2012 Mauritania has hosted more than 60,000 people in the Mberra camp alone, which is on the way to becoming the country’s fourth largest city in terms of population. He added that several thousand other refugees are in localities of the two Hodhs and in urban agglomerations such as Nouakchott and Nouadhibou, stressing that apart from Sahelian refugees, other refugees from Cote d’Ivoire and Central Africa are in our country. <\/p>\n
Mr. Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug affirmed that since the accession of His Excellency the President of the Republic Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, to power, the policy of Mauritania regarding the reception of refugees has become both generous and rigorous, humane and respectful of the rule of law. \u201cIt is now based on sharing with our populations the use of our natural resources, access to our infrastructure and equipment in terms of health and education and to public social services offered, particularly in terms of food security\u201d, as he put it. <\/p>\n
The Minister noted that within the framework of the operationalization of the conclusions of Bamako, our country has made notable progress in terms of the inclusion of refugees in the national systems of health and the services of electricity, water, sanitation, and local development, stressing in this context that the Mauritanian government has implemented the development plan of M’Berra, which includes all these aspects, particularly education. \u201cThis plan is publicly funded\u201d, as he revealed. <\/p>\n
Mr. Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug noted that in parallel with these development efforts and for a perfect integration of refugees and the protection of their internationally recognized rights, Mauritania has worked to improve its procedures for identifying people in need of international protection, to strengthen the reception capacity of host communities, to develop social engineering to ensure social cohesion and good understanding between populations and refugees, and to create the conditions for voluntary return movements of refugees in conditions of safety and dignity. <\/p>\n
