On 2 September, in Nouakchott, Mr. Sid’Ahmed Ould Bennane, the Commissioner for Human Rights, Humanitarian Action, and Relations with Civil Society, held a working session with Mr. Jihad Madhi, the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights of migrants.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, the Commissioner reviewed the government’s efforts to promote and protect the rights of migrants, as well as the measures taken by the authorities in this regard, including the enactment of laws, the creation of institutions, and the general guarantees offered by the government to migrants.<\/p>\n
Mr. Sid’Ahmed Ould Bennane affirmed that our country continues to strengthen the protection of the rights of migrants and refugees on its territory, emphasizing that the government has worked to develop the legal framework and establish effective mechanisms to combat human trafficking and protect victims.<\/p>\n
He explained that the State had regularized the situation of more than 136,000 migrants, created reception centers for refugees and unaccompanied children, and provided them with legal and humanitarian assistance.<\/p>\n
He added that the government had prioritized awareness-raising and training for judicial and security services as part of a national migration management strategy for the period 2011-2030.<\/p>\n
The Commissioner stated that Mauritania is committed to humanitarian principles and human rights, while preserving national security and strengthening regional and international cooperation in the field of migration.<\/p>\n
He considered these efforts to be a qualitative step forward in protecting human rights and strengthening the country’s international reputation.<\/p>\n
It is noteworthy that the UN Special Rapporteur arrived in Mauritania today on a ten-day visit.<\/p>\n
During this visit, he will assess the laws, policies, and practices in force in the country and their impact on the rights of migrants.<\/p>\n
He will also conduct field visits to Nouakchott, Nouadhibou, and Selibabi, and hold meetings with the relevant administrative, security, and judicial authorities, as well as independent national human rights institutions, UN agencies, regional organizations, civil society organizations, and migrants.
