The adoption of the African Union (AU) as a permanent member of the G20 is an important strategic step to support global dialogue, said His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the President of the Republic and Chairman of the African Union (AU).<\/p>\n
Addressing the 19th G20 Summit, which began on 18 November in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the President of the Republic welcomed the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty initiative, declaring that the AU is ready to cooperate with the Brazilian presidency and all G20 members to activate this alliance. His Excellency affirmed that the AU is ready to establish an African regional office as a center for promoting this global effort.<\/p>\n

– Ladies and Gentlemen.<\/p>\n
It gives me great pleasure, on my behalf and my fellow African leaders, to express our sincere thanks to His Excellency Mr. Lula da Silva and all the members of the G20 for unanimously adopting the African Union as a permanent member of the G20 to promote inclusive international governance. With 55 countries and 1.4 billion inhabitants, the African Union is a region whose representation is a strategic step in supporting global dialogue.<\/p>\n
I greatly appreciate that the Brazilian presidency has made the issue of poverty and hunger a central theme of our summit. I welcome the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty initiative as an important concrete step toward tackling the challenges associated with these two widespread global phenomena.<\/p>\n
The state of food security in the world is alarming, with acute poverty rising for the first time in decades and the number of hungry people in the world increasing by more than 152 million since 2019.<\/p>\n
Our African continent is the most affected by poverty and hunger in the world, with one in five people living in malnutrition conditions, and more than 300 million Africans are expected to be chronically undernourished by 2030 if no action is taken.<\/p>\n
Africa’s difficult food situation is due to many interrelated factors, including economic imbalances and the resulting fragility and deep social disparities as well as armed conflict, political instability, rapid population growth, and the effects of climate change, including droughts, floods, and insufficient agricultural production.<\/p>\n

We are convinced that the fight against hunger and poverty is only effective if it is collective. Through effective international cooperation and multilateral partnerships, we can promote sustainable agriculture, social protection systems, education, infrastructure investment, and climate adaptation in a way that will positively and strongly influence our progress toward achieving MDG 1.<\/p>\n
The African Union strives to encourage continental and international partnerships and implement reforms that prioritize the fight against poverty and hunger across the continent.<\/p>\n
Our organization has therefore drawn up a global strategy for the African agricultural development program for the period 2026-2035. It has also prepared the complementary Kampala Declaration, which will be adopted at the Extraordinary Assembly in January. This event will raise awareness of the global alliance against hunger and poverty.<\/p>\n
I would like to state, from this rostrum, that the African Union is ready to cooperate with the Brazilian presidency and all G20 members to activate the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty and confirm its readiness to establish an African regional office as a center for promoting this global effort.<\/p>\n
