During his speech at the Future Summit, held Monday in New York on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazwani, President of the Republic and Chairperson of the African Union, affirmed that this summit constitutes an exceptional and precious opportunity prompted by the growing awareness among all countries and peoples of the unity of human destiny and the collective responsibility towards the common future of humanity.<\/p>\n
His Excellency expressed that our country, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the African Union, welcomes the Charter for the Future that was adopted, and called for reforming the UN system, especially the UN Security Council, in a way that allows the African continent to make its voice heard with the strength to ensure that its priorities are taken into account in international agendas.<\/p>\n
The following is the text of the President’s speech.<\/p>\n

– Mr. President.<\/p>\n
– Ladies and Gentlemen.<\/p>\n
This Future Summit constitutes an exceptional and precious opportunity prompted by the growing awareness among all countries and peoples of the unity of human destiny and the collective responsibility for the common future.<\/p>\n
The recent violent shocks and severe crises in our world are a cause for great concern for the common future.<\/p>\n
If we continue to pursue the Sustainable Development Goals on the same path, with the same mechanisms and pace, we will not be able to eradicate poverty, achieve peace and security, restore the ecological balance of our planet, or build comprehensive sustainable development in the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n
It is no secret that stalling or slowing our progress towards achieving these goals would have devastating consequences for our present and the future of our planet and our future generations.<\/p>\n
This is why the African continent, as a union and as countries, has made great efforts to realize Agenda 2063, which is fully aligned with the SDGs.<\/p>\n
In this context, our country, the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, like other African countries, has worked hard to fight violence, terrorism, poverty and fragility, to develop human capital, and to contribute to African economic integration.<\/p>\n
However, the overall results achieved in this context, regionally and internationally, fall short of the required level; moreover, their security and developmental returns have been undermined by wars, conflicts, economic crises, climate change, debt burden, and imbalances in international governance, politics, and economics.<\/p>\n
To face all these challenges, the international community must search for radical, effective and efficient solutions that establish a common program of action to accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals by renewing trust and solidarity among peoples and countries, by creating a new dynamic in multilateral cooperation and by reformulating the rules of international governance, both financial and political.<\/p>\n
Our country, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the African Union, welcomes the adopted Charter for the Future and renews, from this rostrum, its call for the reform of the United Nations system, especially the Security Council, to allow our continent to make its voice heard with the strength to ensure that its priorities are taken into account in international agendas.<\/p>\n
It also calls for resolving the debt issue, strengthening cooperation to address the growing environmental challenges, promoting multilateral cooperation and ensuring international peace and security so that we can, together, save our planet from loss and build a comprehensive sustainable development that provides prosperity for all the peoples of the world.<\/p>\n
