On 23 October, in Nouakchott, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, received a UN delegation led by Mr. Leonardo Santos Simao, the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Special Representative of the Secretary General for West Africa and the Sahel, with Ms. Elizabeth Spehar, the UN Deputy Secretary General for Peacebuilding Support, as a member.<\/p>\n
The meeting focused on areas of cooperation between Mauritania and the United Nations, ways to develop and strengthen them, and issues of common interest.<\/p>\n
In a statement to the Mauritanian news agency, at the end of the meeting, Mr. Simao praised Mauritania\u2019s efforts in the field of development to build a democratic society based on internal dialogue.<\/p>\n
He stressed that these efforts add up to the major role that Mauritania plays in maintaining peace and stability in the region and welcoming refugees.<\/p>\n
For her part, Ms. Spehar made the following statement:<\/p>\n
\u201cI arrived in Mauritania on Sunday. I am beginning a visit with a delegation of partners who work with us to consolidate peace in the world. I am delighted to be here in Mauritania. This is my first time visiting this beautiful country. I want to visit different corners of the country. It is in this context that we will have the opportunity, starting tomorrow, to visit several regions, such as Bassiknou, Selibabi, and even Nema.<\/p>\n
We have just had a meeting with His Excellency the President of the Republic. It was an honor for me to meet him. I therefore had the opportunity to speak to him and salute the very important efforts of this country in terms of development, strengthening institutions for the promotion of human rights, but also your concerns regarding climate change. I reassured him of the support of the United Nations. We will support this country toward sustainable development and lasting peace. We are with you, and we appreciate all of Mauritania’s efforts in terms of not only development and progress in your own country but also the positive example and influence that you represent in this region.<\/p>\n
