The annual report presented on 19 June 2023 by Mr. Volker T\u00fcrk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, on human rights in the world, before the 53rd session of the Human Rights Council<\/span><\/span> for the Year 2023, held in Geneva, praised the \u201cefforts of our country in the field of the promotion and protection of human rights\u201d.<\/span> It “constitutes striking proof of the effectiveness of the approach adopted by the Mauritanian Government to promote and protect rights and freedoms and preserve human dignity, in accordance with the guidelines of His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould<\/span><\/span><\/span> Cheikh El-Ghazouani, the President of the Republic\u201d, as the OHCHR wrote, in a press release.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Here is the text of this press release:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

” Mr. Volker T\u00fcrk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, presented Monday, 19 June 2023, his annual report on human rights in the world, before the 53rd session of the Human Rights Council for the Year 2023, held in Geneva.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In his first annual report since taking office as High Commissioner, Mr. T\u00fcrk highlighted the impact of the OHCHR\u2019s work on a wide range of issues,<\/span><\/span> including preventing human rights violations, addressing discrimination and inequality, supporting victims and prosecuting those responsible for human rights violations.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In the same report, the High Commissioner praised our country’s efforts in the area of the promotion and protection of human rights.<\/span><\/span> He further indicated that the High Commissioner worked in collaboration with the Government of Mauritania to end discrimination, particularly slavery and promote women and girls\u2019 rights and the rule of law.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He added that the Mauritanian government has facilitated independent investigations into human rights violations and has granted OHCHR full access to all detention centers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I<\/span><\/span>n his report, the High Commissioner highly appreciated the judicial treatment of slavery cases in our country, indicating that no less than 38 slavery cases have been investigated by the courts under Law 031-2015 criminalizing slavery<\/span><\/span> and repressing slavery-like practices.<\/span><\/span><\/span> He also pointed out that judicial decisions have been rendered in this context.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He thanked Mauritania for its cooperation with the United Nations Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery during his visit to our country in May 2022.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This tribute paid by this prominent UN official to the efforts of our country in the field of the promotion and protection of human rights constituted striking proof of the<\/span><\/span> effectiveness of the approach adopted by the Mauritanian Government to promote and protect rights and freedoms and preserve human dignity, in accordance with the guidelines of His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazouani, the President of the Republic.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On this occasion, the Commission for Human Rights, Humanitarian Action, and Relations with Civil Society expressed its sincere thanks to the OHCHR in our country<\/span><\/span> for his constant support for Mauritania’s human rights efforts.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Commission also reaffirms our country’s determination to move forward in preserving and strengthening its achievements as well as the pursuit of positive interaction with international instruments for the protection of human rights.<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
