Minister of Agriculture and the General Delegate for Ta’azur hold a Meeting with the Farmers of Foum Lekleita and announce a New Sugar Project.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, Mr. Momma Ould Beibata, along with the General Delegate for National Solidarity and the Fight Against Exclusion ‘Tazurt’, and the Governor of Goigol, Mr. Mohamed Mokhtar Ould Abdi, held a meeting yesterday, Monday, at the headquarters of the Mauritanian Sugar Company and its derivatives in the municipality of Fum Lkleeta, with farmers in the Fum Lkleita project, to announce a new sugar project as part of the public-private partnership, which will begin implementation at the start of 2026 in the Fum Lkleita area.

 

In his speech in front of the farmers of Fum Lakleita,  the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security highlighted the importance of this strategic project, which is the result of significant efforts made by the state as part of its strategies aimed at providing decent living conditions for the residents of the region.

He added that the state, under the high directives of His Excellency President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, has decided to implement this project within the framework of the partnership between the public and private sectors, after failing to find a company with the expertise and experience in the field ready to achieve the desired goals.

 

The Minister of Agriculture pointed out that these studies have resulted in an agreement with a private company that will work in the cultivation and production of sugar cane in service of local development, in line with the aspirations of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, who has made achieving self-sufficiency and food sovereignty a top priority. He expressed his satisfaction with what he observed from farmers in terms of their response and commitment to the call of His Excellency the President, which has indeed been realized in the products of rice, traditional grains, and vegetables.

 

He pointed out that the choice of this region to establish a sugar project is not coincidental, but rather a result of the significant agricultural capabilities that the Foum Lkleita area possesses. He emphasized that the new sugar production company, which will launch in 2026, will create a suitable environment that will change the face of life and provide green job opportunities and local labor. It will also help achieve 80% self-sufficiency in our sugar needs.

He stated that the sugar production company in Foum Lekleita has become a tangible reality that must be worked on to benefit from its resources.

 

In turn, the General Delegate for National Solidarity and Anti-Exclusion, Mr. Cheikh Abdullah Beddah, pointed out that the district of Mboud is a top priority for His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazwani, through directing massive investments that will be funded by the General Delegation to reclaim 2000 hectares according to high technology standards and required quality, and to establish units for storing agricultural products and employing 2000 people in the district.

 

He emphasized the importance of the sugar production project and the Tazur project in creating added value and providing modern agricultural equipment aimed at bringing happiness to the local population in Foum Lekleita.For his part, the governor of Gorgol, Mr. Mohamed Moukhtar Ould Abdi, stressed the importance of this project, which is part of the wise policies of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.

He confirmed that the administrative and local authorities will closely monitor this project to achieve the desired goals.Meanwhile, the Director General of the Public-Private Partnership, Mr. Mohamed Salek Ould Bihah, elaborated on the expected results from the sugar production company in Foum Lekhleita.

He stated that the studies conducted to establish this company took into account the economic, social, agricultural, and developmental specificities of the region, where the company will provide 3,500 job opportunities and modern irrigation methods, as well as train local businessmen.

The mayor of Foum Lakleita, Mr. Hashim Ould Abdullah Ould Ali, praised in his speech the level of achievements witnessed by the municipality under the victorious leadership of His Excellency President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, expressing the aspirations of the municipality’s residents for further interventions.

The meeting was accompanied by interventions from some farmers who valued the establishment of a new sugar production company in Foum Lakleita, calling for the restoration of the old irrigation agriculture project and the completion of the reclamation of the total area of the project.Some speakers also demanded the provision of machinery for maintaining agricultural areas and for the maintenance and construction of drainage channels according to the required technical standards, emphasizing the importance of combating underdevelopment and poverty by all available means to improve the living conditions of the population in this area.The meeting took place in the presence of administrative and security authorities, local elected officials, and representatives of farmer organizations in the municipality of Foum Lekleita.
